Dialysis
is a one of the mode of renal
replacement therapy. It can
either be peritoneal (PD) or
hemodialysis (HD). It is the
procedure by which body’s
internal environment is maintained
by removing the unwanted things
and replacing the desired substances.
However it is an incomplete
replacement of lost renal function.
So, Kidney Transplantation is
the definitive treatment for
end stage kidney disease (ESKD)
Hemodialysis
was started in Nepal in Bir
Hospital in 1987. In Nepal Medical
College & Teaching Hospital
(NMCTH) it was started on 2061/11/05
(Feb 16th 2005) with two brand
new machines (Nikkiso DBB-26).
It was started with an aim to
provide quality service at a
very low price which Nepali
patients could afford. This
unit is using only bicarbonate
as a buffer. However, within
six month number of patients
seeking hemodialysis increased
and to cope with the patients
number two other machines were
added in this unit. Now this
unit is running with four machines.
To
provide quality service of hemodialysis,
water purification system plays
a very important role. So this
unit is equipped with water
treatment plant with very latest
technology. It is also equipped
with ultra violet lamp to kill
the organisms.Peritoneal dialysis
in NMCTH was started since 1996
and is being done on regular
basis. Due to availability of
HD, PD has been limited to unstable
patients.
