Introduction
Nepal Medical College (NMC)
is affiliated to Kathmandu
University and undertakes
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor
of Surgery (MBBS) program.
The program is recognised
by Nepal Medical Council.
Undergraduate medical students
become competent Medical Graduates
after completing five and
half year of MBBS program.
NMC has its own Teaching Hospital
and a Community Satellite
Health Centre in Kathmandu
Valley and utilizes them for
the teaching - learning activities
of medical students as well
as provides curative, preventive,
promotive and rehabilitative
health care services to the
people. The standard of MBBS
program and quality of health
care are ensured by research
studies and evaluation.
The
Teaching hospital which is
named after the college as
Nepal Medical College Teaching
Hospital (NMCTH) and provides
Out Patient Department services
and Inpatient care in Clinical
disciplines - Medicine, Surgery,
Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Urology,
Neurosurgery, Psychiatry,
Dermatology, Otorhinolaryngology,
, Ophthalmology, Dental/ immunization
and counseling . The hospital
provides round the clock emergency
and casualty services and
runs 24 hour ambulance service.
Elective
Program
NMC encourages own students
for undertaking elective studies.
Facilities are available at
NMC for acquiring clinical
experience as well as Community
Field experiences for international
medical students. Minimum
period accepted for Elective
Program will be four weeks
which can be extended on four
weekly basis further as per
the requirement of individual
student, for which a letter
from the concerned authority
is compulsory.
How
to Apply?
International students, in
clinical years of study, at
medical schools or medical
colleges affiliated to Universities
are eligible to apply for
the elective program that
you wish to undertake at NMC.
Then select one of the two
categories of IMSEP mentioned
under, which you wish to undertake.
Then, forward your application
by email or fax to the address
given for correspondence mentioned
on the front cover page.
Nature
of Elective Program
Category
One
This is self-determined Elective
program in which the applicant
chooses the nature, discipline
and duration of elective study
on one's own discipline of
interest and writes about
it to Nepal Medical College.
The applicant is required
to write own learning objectives
and discuss the elective project
proposal with own national
guide and after finalization,
sends the application with
the Elective Proposal to NMC.
The NMC will discuss the Elective
Proposal with the Head of
the concerned department and
will approve or disapprove
the Elective Proposal and
write to the applicant accordingly.
In case of approval NMC will
find a co-guide from the concerned
discipline at NMC who will
supervise the student during
the entire elective study.
At the completion of the elective
study, the student will receive
a certificate of completion
of Elective Program.
Category
Two
This is tailored by NMC for
international students. While
designing the Elective Package,
due consideration is given
to enable international students
acquire an overall experience
related to clinical and community
health problems seen in Nepal.
Students
get placements at departments
related to medicine, surgical,
Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology
and Community Medicine disciplines
either at the Hospital and
Community settings. Weekly
placement schedules will expose
them to health problems related
to different disciplines.
The academic section will
make rotation schedule and
fix it for international student.
The international student
cannot make alterations to
the fixed program. Supervisors
will be identified when posted
at different departments.
There will not be any co-guide
from a particular department
assigned for a student. At
the completion of the elective
study, the student will receive
a certificate of completion
of Elective program.

N.B.
Students wanting to apply
for elective study are advised
to note that a maximum of
eight weeks would be appropriate
for doing Elective study at
NMC. However, should your
academic program demand elective
study of more duration than
that of eight weeks, special
consideration can be taken
in such cases by making request
to individual departments
of NMC.
Hospital
International Medical students
must wear white aprons while
on hospital placements. Student
identity is a must for security
reasons. Nepal Medical College
Teaching Hospital (NMCTH)
is the first hospital of its
kind that functions through
computer networking. Work
begins at 0800 hours and extends
upto 1600hours daily except
on SATURDAY which is non-working
day in Nepal.
Visa
International Students are
required to get a Tourist
Visa of three months period
from the Royal Nepalese Embassies
or Royal Nepalese Consulate
in own cities. Information
regarding NMC and International
Medical Student Elective Program
(IMSEP) has been notified
to the Royal Nepalese Embassies
and Consulates around the
world and request has been
made by NMC to extend help
for obtaining Tourist Visa
by International Medical Students
wanting to come to NMC for
Elective Programs. Individual
International students must
take care of visa fee themselves.
Accommodation
International Students must
find own accommodation in
Kathmandu. However, Should
a student like to get some
help to find own accommodation,
such student must make a request
and NMC could help to finding
suitable accommodation for
them.
Meals
Students can buy snacks at
the NMC Cafeteria or outside.
Different food items to suit
different tastes are available
in Kathmandu. However, students
should try different items
of Nepalese cuisine for a
change.
Inoculation
International Medical Students
are advised to see their own
doctors at home and to seek
their advice before coming
to Nepal, regarding having
vaccinations against communicable
diseases that they may like
to protect themselves from.
NMC does not provide any type
of vaccination for International
Medical Students.
Medical
Care
All international students
coming to NMC are advised
to have Medical Insurance
coverage to take care of the
expenditure incurred in treatment.
In case a student becomes
ill, during the elective period
at NMC medications available
at NMCTH will be provided.
In case a student becomes
ill in Nepal during the period
not attached for Elective
Program at NMC, the individual
student must take care on
his/her own and NMC will not
be held responsible for taking
care of their health problems
during such a period.
Transport
Public transport from the
city to NMC is available.
In case one likes to use the
Hospital Bus Service, one
is welcome to do so. A taxi
is available but is an expensive
for E-mail/Internet/Fax/International
Telephone Service. All are
available at NMC. However
individual has to pay for
the service utilized.
Library
NMC has a good library facilities
and students on elective programmes
can utilize free of charge.
All books are in English.
Computer
Laboratory
NMC is the first medical college
of its kind in Nepal, which
has got a good computer laboratory.
Students on Elective Program
may use free of charges.
Banks
International and National
Banks are in plenty for the
exchange of Travellers Checks
and foreign currencies. Exchange
rates fluctuate on day to
day basis. Banks demand receipt
of foreign currencies declaration
on arrival at Airport in Nepal
when foreign currencies more
than US $ 2000: in amount
is to be exchanged in Nepalese
currency.

in Nepal

Rafting
Many mighty Himalayan rivers

Weather
and Wear
Though twelve months are divided
into six seasons according
to Nepalese Calendar, Kathmandu
weather can be divided into
five categories for practical
purposes. The winter starts
from Mid November to January;
The spring from February to
April; The summer between
April and May, Monsoon from
June to August: and the autumn
from September to mid-November.
The temperature would vary
from one season to another.
Minimum in winter would touch
down to minus degree Celsius
while during summer mercury
would raise upto 36 Degrees
Celsius. Light cotton wear
would be comfortable for the
summer and monsoon while the
spring and autumn would require
light woolens. The winter
would require heavy woolens.
Drug
Trafficking
Drug trafficking is prohibited
in Nepal and persons found
guilty of drug trafficking
are prosecuted under the law
of the land.
Substance
Abuse
Mass media notify incidences
of substance abuse and NMC
has the policy to discourage
people against substance abuse
and fight against it.
